Dry Eye Explained
Dry eye is a chronic problem and can often be quite uncomfortable. It’s more common among older adults and people living with certain medical conditions such as diabetes.
Your tears play an important role in your eye health and are made of 3 distinct layers: oil (meibum), water, and mucus. The oil layer of your eye is produced by the meibomian gland.
A common cause of dry eye is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). When the quality of the oil becomes compromised, the water layer on the surface of your eye dries out quickly.

Our Dry Eye Treatment Technology
At Advanced Vision Care, we use tried and tested technology to assist patients who may be struggling with dry eye. Regardless of where you’re at with your vision health or how much your symptoms interfere with your daily life, our treatment technology allows us to offer you relief and maintain comfort in your eyes.
IPL Therapy
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is one way of treating dry eye that involves using light energy.
IPL therapy helps with dry eye by targeting the root cause of the condition—inflammation. This treatment focuses on improving the dysfunction of the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing oil for tears. This targeted approach can significantly improve dry eye symptoms and even slow the progression of chronic dry eye.
iLux Thermal Treatment
iLux thermal treatment targets the meibomian glands in your eye that aren’t working properly. This technology uses localized heat and compression therapy to improve dry eye symptoms.
After a single treatment, patients may see improved oil production from the meibomian glands, resulting in a healthier tear film.

ZEST Eyelid Treatment
Zocular Eyelid System Treatment (ZEST) is an eyelid cleaning and debridement system using the natural gel from okra. When dirt or debris accumulates on the edges of your eyelid, it can cause a scratchy or burning feeling. This is a quick and comfortable procedure that can bring immediate relief to dry eye symptoms.
Optase Eye Drops
Optase eye drops contain glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which lubricates and sustains the moisture on the surface of your eye. This helps relieve irritating symptoms and heal damage that may have happened to your eye.
These eye drops are gentle enough for daily use and are safe to use if you wear contact lenses.
Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs are small devices placed in the eye’s tear ducts, which are called puncta. Your puncta are the tiny openings in your eyelid that drain tears from your eyes.
A punctal plug stops tears from draining from the eye. This keeps the surface of your eye moist and relieves uncomfortable dry eye symptoms such as scratching and burning.
Omega-3 Supplements
Omega-3 supplements can help support overall eye health by reducing inflammation, resulting in a reduction of dry eye symptoms. They’re normally found naturally in different types of fish or dietary supplements like fish oil.
Meibomian Gland Expression
During meibomian gland expression, pressure is applied to the eyelids using small paddle-like tools to squeeze out hardened oils from your eye.
This procedure helps stimulate oil production in the eye and minimize dry eye symptoms.
Eye Masks
Heated eye masks sometimes carry moisture and can calm inflammation, unclog swollen eyelids, and improve circulation.
When used for dry eye, the heat from the mask can help improve the functioning of the tear-producing glands in your eye. Heated eye masks are a simple and widely used approach to help relieve dry eye symptoms.
